The world is fast realizing the need to address the issues of environmental sustainability. The agro economy is set to witness the arrival of new paradigms, methodologies and practices that are holistic and yield sustainable business results.
As the world's largest plantations company, Sime Darby Plantation recognises the challenges in pursuing a balanced approach in its plantation activities. Researching various possibilities for breakthrough in biotechnology related to palm oil, it is committed to constant innovation to expand the usage of palm oil and reduce plantation wastes. Together with like-minded organisations, it strives towards achieving this goal.
Plantations Management
The combination of plantations interests of three companies that made up Sime Darby has created a massive 524,626 hectares of oil palm planted hectarage concentrated in Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak and Sabah in Malaysia and Sumatera, Kalimantan and Sulawesi in Indonesia.
Apart from oil palm, which represents Sime Darby's biggest plantations interest, we are also involved in the plantations' downstream activities, namely the oils and fats and oleochemical businesses. This makes us an integrated oil palm plantation company with activities throughout the value chain. Alongside the oil palm plantations, we also venture into agri-business activities, rubber plantation and processing.
Upstream
Sime Darby makes full use of our more than 60 years of experience in oil palm planting and processing to give the world the best harvests. With our relentless search for "best practices", we aspire to make Sime Darby the top producer of oil palm and crude palm oil.
Plantations Malaysia
Sime Darby's plantations interest in Malaysia is represented by a total of 140 oil palm estates spanning over 329,470 hectares in Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak and Sabah and 9,507 hectares of rubber in Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor and Kedah in Peninsular Malaysia.
We have 42 oil palm mills throughout Malaysia to process our bounty harvests. These mills have an average capacity of 49,870 tonnes a day.
Plantations Indonesia
With 195,856 hectares of estates, Sime Darby's oil palm plantations interest in Indonesia makes up 35.2 per cent of our total land bank. Our commitment to oil palm plantation "best practices" similarly applies in our non-Malaysian environment to produce the best quality harvests across our operating environments.
We have 23 oil palm mills with an average capacity of 49,870 tonnes a day throughout our operations in Indonesia.
Downstream
Sime Darby's plantations' downstream activities go beyond the conventional manufacturing of edible oil and over the boundary of our shores. But no matter how far we go and the multitude of products we produce, we never forget one thing - aiming for the best in quality - because we know at the end of the day quality is what the customers are looking for.
